The Photographers’ Gallery in London is showing a exhibiton called “When You’re a Boy”, with the retrospective work of the stylist Simon Foxton until 4th of October. It’s the first time the gallery is presenting the work of a stylist. Simon is specialized in men’s fashion and started to work for “i-D” magazine in 1984.

Picture by Jason Evans, published in i-D, May 2004
As other men’s fashion stylists that I know, Simon also doesn’t consider himself a fashion person. He recently said to “Dazed and Confused” website: ” I’m not that interested in fashion. I like clothing, as a way of making an image but I’m not that desperately interested in the latest collections, or the latest trend or whatever, it’s more about using clothes as a tool”.
The exhibition has images of different photographers for different magazines, including his three main co-workers: Nick Knight, Jason Evans and Alistair Mclellan.

Left to right: image from Jason Evans published in i-D, July 1991, and a image of Simon’s studio from Dazeddigital.com.
Like photographers do, Simon uses scrapbooks with images that he collects from all sort of magazines, but also pornography books and advertising. Some of these scrapbooks are shown in the exhibition as well.
By the way: The Photographers’ Gallery is one of my favourites places to visit in London. In 2006 I saw an exhibition there with the original photographs used in the Michelangelo Antonioni’s movie “Blow Up” (1966). It was remarkable because the movie and this visit keep coming back to my mind. I must had watched “Blow Up” around 20 times.

ueba_yeah!!
i love simon foxton’s “stylings” since the very 80s_soo inspiring.
i was used to his work when “once upon a time”, i was a stylist and was working hard to publish mens fashion’s stories on Caderno Ela_o globo, my house/maison, indeed.
as strong as ray petri, but in a different mood/style, foxton is a reference on mens affaires.
once in london, you should look for petris works and partnership with dereck jarman_very strong, indeed.
i was introduced to jarman’s film sebastienne, by my former_saudoso_friend alaiur gomes.
isso merece 333 uebas !!!
